When you license and install an ERP software suite, you are implementing the software as it exists at that point in time. This will be the latest version (release) that is in general availability at the time that you take delivery.
The software supplier will continue to develop the system, fixing any reported problems and adding new features and functions. Most user companies pay the developer an annual maintenance and support fee, based on a percentage of the original license cost, that funds this continued development as well as support and help desk services.
ERP software is in a continuous improvement cycle that shows no sign of letting up. User companies that do not subscribe to the support service or do not install the periodic releases or upgrades, run the danger of falling behind in what the market (and their competitors) get from their ERP systems. Being “down level” also makes support more difficult and, eventually, the developer may discontinue support for older releases altogether.
Why would a company not install the upgrade, especially if they’ve paid for it? Strangely enough, it happens all the time. Installing an upgrade can be disruptive and has a cost (beyond the maintenance fee) primarily for the IT department. Truth be told, the cost is moderate – unless the company has modified the package. Then, the cost can be enormous.
When a user company modifies programs within a packaged ERP product suite (or any other packaged software), they take on sole responsibility for maintenance of the new and changed code. When the packaged software developer issues a new release, it may change or replace portions of the previous program code. If the code has been modified, the replacement may overwrite those modifications with unpredictable results. Therefore, the local IT folks must go through each and every program in the new release, determine what effect the new release may have on the previously modified programs, and either remove the modifications or re-apply them to the new replacement code.
Modifying packaged programs is difficult, expensive, disruptive, and severely impacts the ability of the user company to move forward with new enhancements that will help companies stay current with industry trends, needs, and technological advancements.
The bright side? With the Jeeves ERP system from Jeeves AB, you save from the get-go, because it’s easy to customize. The system delivers an unparalleled development environment that allows those with even basic technical knowledge to develop the system without risk, and quickly address business growth and change.
It’s also easy to upgrade. Because the architecture separates the system’s core functionality from your personalization and data, you get all the new features, while retaining all the work you’ve put into making the system your own. On Jeeves ERP, upgrades can take place in days—not months, and aging customizations are not paid for again and again.
It’s probably no surprise that the upgrade costs of Jeeves ERP are significantly lower than the industry average, or that Jeeves ERP customers upgrade twice as often as the customers of other ERP solutions in Sweden. We're proud of Jeeves' truly refreshing approach to ERP upgrades.
