Company Builds on Success of Previous Years and Version 11.2, Announces 2016 Initiatives

Sonceboz, March 30, 2016—SolvAxis, supplier of the leading Swiss-made ERP solution, today announced the acceptance of ProConcept ERP Version 11.1 within its customer base, as well as rollout plans for its upcoming Version 11.2 and new product packaging.

An earlier blog outlined the differences between “regular” order-based manufacturing and project manufacturing. As a reminder, order-based manufacturing is oriented around, well, orders (e.g., jobs orders, production schedules). Project-based manufacturing incorporates a number of “orders” as well (including work orders, purchase orders and other activities), and they are used as control and reporting points.

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is the process of tracking and managing a product through its entire lifecycle from the first idea through development, production, sale, use, and ultimate disposal. First developed in the 1960s in the automotive industry as a tool for reducing product development lead time, PLM is now standard practice in most durable goods industries—especially automotive, aerospace and defense, and electronics.

Innovation is what provides longevity to a manufacturing company—products do not last forever. And product cycles are shrinking, making it more important than ever to look for new ideas and new approaches wherever they can be found. Most companies realize that the best source of innovative ideas may well be right inside their existing organization. However, the traditional corporate environment might unintentionally discourage innovation.

Any system change or improvement project that requires an investment of capital, time or other resources must be approved by senior management and perhaps by the board of directors before the project can be authorized and started. And that can sometimes be a problem.

Every company must invest in equipment and technology to increase output, improve efficiency, and grow the business. Prudent management will only make investments that will pay off. Investments that return benefit to the company that exceeds the cost. It is customary, therefore, to view each and every potential investment through a cost-benefit analysis prior to committing to the project.

Manufacturing has an image problem. To the general public, and most importantly to high school and college-aged youths, manufacturing work is perceived to be back-breaking, tedious, dirty, and dangerous. This perception is a major contributor to the “skills gap” in manufacturing, with companies struggling to find workers to fill jobs in the factory despite high unemployment rates. People just don’t want to work in manufacturing, and young people are not interested in learning the skills needed to get those jobs.

The recent release of the Apple watch is sparking discussions about mobile technology and when or how it may impact the plant. It’s still early in the development cycle for “wearable” technology and its utility in the plant environment is dubious at best.

A good quality management software application can do a great job of calculating statistical data, managing control limits, documenting test results, and managing test plans. But quality management and compliance with regulatory requirements—as well as the policy imperatives of companies and their customers—requires bullet-proof documentation and traceability that involves the entire technology infrastructure represented by your ERP system.
